NSW Callers Association Code of Ethics

Every Association needs guidelines for its members to follow. They give a sense of direction and an understanding of what is acceptable behaviour. Our Constitution contains our "Code of Ethics", which has been carefully developed over many years:

APPENDIX D - CODE OF ETHICS
NEW SOUTH WALES SQUARE DANCE CALLERS ASSOCIATION INC.

  1. Always act in a way that reflects credit on Square Dancing and conduct yourself with professional integrity and sincerity.
  2. Refrain from calling while affected by alcohol or any other substance that may cause your actions to bring Square Dancing into disrepute.
  3. Except in extreme emergencies, honour all scheduled calling engagements. Meaning:
  1. See that suitable decorum is observed at all square dance functions.
  2. Strive to promote good fellowship among your fellow callers and maintain a friendly and professional attitude towards them. Never enter into active competition with other callers. Never intentionally undercut a fee quoted by another caller. Do not publicly criticize another caller or take sides in public argument concerning callers and/or dancers.
  3. Give every possible assistance to novice callers and co-operate with fellow callers in the free exchange of material and helpful ideas.
  4. Adhere to the accepted and standardized terminology and practices of square and round dancing and do everything possible to promote their development.
  5. All members of this Association and applicants for membership shall acknowledge that it is their duty to introduce new dancers into the activity by teaching regular beginner classes. This must take place within a reasonable distance (i.e. in the same general area) that the member or applicant operates or intends to operate a Square Dance Club for experienced Square Dancers.

As a demonstration of the general acceptance of this Code, we have a Vice President in charge of "Grievances", but they are rarely called on to settle any complaints!
