TURN THRU
Callerlab definition:
Each dancer steps forward and joins right hands (pigeon wing hold in Australia) with the other dancer. They turn by the right one half (180o), release arm holds and step forwards, ending back to back with each other.
Teaching suggestions:
Dancers of all levels of experience often poorly understand this movement. Part of the reason for this is that many callers only call it from circles or stars (eg. "4 men star left, turn thru, left allemande."). If TURN THRU is only called in place of a right hand swing (directly before left allemande), there will be confusion when dancers are asked to turn thru from lines or facing couples. There will be confusion unless it is taught correctly.
It is the callers responsibility to have the dancers facing in the right direction after turn thru by calling it regularly from different formations.
It may take a bit of time and repetition to instruct the dancer in the correct use of turn thru. Do not rush, and resist the temptation to get frustrated if the dancers get it wrong a few times.
