ADSL modem/router/switch
Easynet Set-up
|
|
 |
 |
|
1. Wait for ADSL line set-up: |
Order your ADSL connection from Easynet.
Purchase suitable modem/firewall/router/LAN switch/LAN cables/line
filters etc. either from Easynet or from a computer store.
Wait for confirmation from Easynet that the ADSL line is activated.
|
 |
 |
|
2. Plug in the hardware: |
Connect the modem to the phone line (no line filter), to the Ethernet
port on one computer (via supplied Ethernet cable), and to mains power
via its power-pack.
Turn
on the modem, then after several seconds, turn on the computer.
The
power LED should be on; the system LED should stop flashing and stay on
after a short time; The LAN port that has an Ethernet cable to the
computer should be on; ppp may be flashing or off or on, but should stay
on most of the time once the modem is configured (further down)
The
important light is the ADSL light. Initially it should flash, then after
a while it should stay on. This indicated the modem has recognised the
ADSL hardware at the telephone exchange (DSLAM) and has synchronised
with it (Line-sync, or Carrier-lock) What it tells you is that the
set-up at the exchange is OK and the phone line to you is suitable for
broadband. At this point you can breath a sigh of relief |
 |

|
6. Add phone filters: |
For every phone, fax, answering machine, around the house using the same
phone line, but not necessarily the same phone wall plug, add in an ADSL
line filter. (With normal filters, up to three maximum) This goes in the
lead from wall to phone.
In the
phone lead to the ADSL modem do not put a filter
Verify all
phones, faxes etc still work |
|
|
3. Set up the computer LAN port: |
In Win XP or Win 2000 this is fairly automatic. To check it is OK: go
into start/(settings/)control panel (classic view). Click on network
connections then right click on the Local Area connection icon and
select properties. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and make sure radio
buttons select 'Obtain an IP address automatically', and 'Obtain DNS
